Seminar Stage Presenters

T.J.  Schwanky
T.J. Schwanky is one of Canada’s most active outdoor writers and television personalities. He writes for a wide variety of North American outdoor publications on everything from walleye fishing to sheep hunting. He is the author of the award-winning book, Walleye Across the West and was a very active on Western Canadian tournament circuits, capturing the Team of the Year title with the Western Walleye Council and being honoured with the award for the Most Outstanding Professional at the Golden Walleye Classic. He co-hosts the hit television series, Outdoor Quest TV with Richard Mellon and the two have been regulars on the seminar stage at the Boat and Sportsmen Shows for over a decade.

T.J. works with a number of hunting and fishing manufacturers testing and evaluating new gear and he is the holder of numerous muzzleloader hunting records. His travels have taken him across the world in search of fish and game but he still rates Alberta as his number-one outdoor destination.
Richard  Mellon
Richard grew up hunting and fishing in northwestern Alberta. The outdoors, were a natural part of growing up in the north and the meat killed was an integral part of feeding the family. Married to Sandi his number 1 hunting buddy, the two have raised 3 kids in the outdoors tradition and are now empty nesters.

Rich began fishing tournaments in the western U.S. and Canada and after becoming a regular on the winner’s stage; Rich thought he would test his talents against North America’s best. In five years on the prestigious In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail in the United States, Rich qualified for the PWT championship 4 times, the first in 1996, his rookie year, and again in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Mellon regularly has articles appearing in Outdoor Canada, Western Sportsman, The Outdoor Edge, Alberta Outdoorsman and also in Barry Mitchell’s Alberta Fishing Guide. Rich is known in the industry for his cutting-edge articles on the newest and hottest fishing and hunting techniques and equipment. It is this hard-hitting, no-nonsense approach to “how-to” writing that makes him a favorite with editors. Rich currently writes the monthly column “Backyard Ballistics” for Alberta Outdoorsman and “The Round in the Chamber” for the Outdoor Edge.

In May 2001, Rich joined ranks with well-known outdoor writer T.J. Schwanky, and the two started producing The Outdoor Quest TV series. The show focuses on hunting across North America with a strong slant on adventure and how-to information. Rich has always been an avid hunter and serious shooter, the advent of the TV show brought muzzleloaders into his life a new area of the shooting sports. Rich was promptly gripped by the new sport and has become immersed in the long range/high performance niche, already taking a whitetail buck at over 220 yards.
Now Richard and TJ are working on a multi title DVD project that will include sheep, elk, deer, moose and caribou titles.

Richard respects all forms of hunting but admits that his eyes really light up when something goes boom and the smell of gunpowder is in the air.

Mellon is a charter member of the Professional Outdoors Media Association
Claudio  Ongaro
Claudio has been an outfitter for over a decade. Currently, he outfits for waterfowl from the Ongaro Lodge in the world famous prairie pothole region in central Eastern Alberta and outfits for trophy whitetails and mule deer in Alberta's remote Western foothills.
Claudio has been published in several outdoor publications since 1989. Feature articles have focused primarily on his areas of expertise, which include hunting for Whitetail and Mule deer, angling for Walleye, and hunting for waterfowl. Many other topics fielding his outdoor experiences have been published. Since 1998, Claudio has been a columnist in Canada’s Outdoor Edge Magazine an has only recently relinquished this position.
An avid outdoorsman, Claudio has also competed aggressively as a Walleye tournament angler and holds the 1993 Alberta Top Overall Team of the Year with his wife Linda. Both Linda and Claudio have held Field Staff status with Shimano since 1990. This competitive nature was spawned early, in the field of cycling, where several Alberta Provincial Championship Medals adorn his wall along with a Bronze National Medal in the Team Pursuit event earned at the Montreal Indoor Track in 1984.

Claudio's personal hunting has taken him from the wind swept cactus strewn prairies to the muddiest muskeg bogs of the lowlands and as high as the snow covered peaks of the Rocky Mountains. He has taken several big game species including numerous trophy Whitetail and Mule deer. The high country has yielded a huge pure white Timber wolf and a Rocky Mountain Bighorn ram. Moose and bear also adorn his photo album. Mallards and Canada geese have swarmed over many of his decoy spreads, both, while guiding and simply enjoying a waterfowl hunt.

Heading to the West coast has always been a part of Claudio's passion. Northern British Columbia waters have produced several Tyee sized fish including a double header where he and Linda boated a 57 lb and 51 lb Chinook (King) salmon. Claudio became Vice President of Chrono Mfg Ltd in 1991. There he helped develop well-accepted hunting products such as the Goose Chair, Stealth Blind, Deceptor Silhouette Decoys, and the full line of Cro'snest Treestands all still manufactured by Chrono. Ongaro Outdoors, under Claudio's guidance, has recently launched its latest venture - the Northern Giants Outdoors Video collection.
